Update 03/2007
The original Lyra that this project is based around has become quite obsolete, so this project is no longer active. This page is being kept up for reference only. I would be more than happy to answer any questions related to the project, however.

The Lyra for Linux Project

The goal of the Lyra for Linux project, as the name would indicate, is to provide Linux compatibility for the RCA Lyra personal digital audio player. There are two main phases, which will later be broken down into individual milestones.

Phase 1:

  • Reverse engineer the encrypted audio used in the Lyra and develop Free Software to encrypt and decrypt the audio files within Linux.
  • Create a driver for the CompactFlash drive included with the Lyra.

  • Reverse engineer the other file formats on the Lyra including bitmaps, executables, and configuration files.

    Phase 2:

  • Create tools to develop new software on the Lyra.
  • Replace the software on the Lyra itself with a Free Software replacement.
  • Port the new software to platforms other than Linux (MacOS, BSD, BeOS, etc)
